He has sung more than 40,000 songs in various languages. He won the Best Male Playback Singer by National Film Award for six times and the Nandi Awards from the Government of Andhra Pradesh as Best playback singer for 25 times. He has won National Film Awards, Filmfare Award, Filmfare Awards South for more than four times from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Balasubrahmanyam was born on a June, 1946 in Konetammapeta Chittoor of Andhra Pradesh. His father name is S. P. Sambamurthy who was a Harikatha artist. S. P. B has two brothers and five sisters. One of his sisters is S.P. Sailaja who is also a playback singer. He has two children Pallavi and charan, who is also a playback singer. Balasubrahmanyam learned to play instruments such as the flute and harmonium while listening to his father. He wants to become an engineer but he discontinued his studies due to typhoid and he joined as an Associate Member of the Institution of Engineers, Chennai. Later he pursued music during his engineering. He won first prize in singing organized Telugu Cultural Organization in 1964.
